What is Hydroseeding?

What is Hydroseeding?

Hydroseeding is a fast, cost-effective way to install a new lawn. The cost to have your new lawn hydroseeded is less than 1/4 the cost of using sod. The end result, in a handful of weeks, is you will have a better looking lawn.

Hydroseed is a special blend of seeds chosen based on the requirements of your location and property, such as: the amount of sun, shade, the terrain, the type of soil and if you have children or pets.

FIRST DAY of Hydroseeding

After the hydro seed is first applied to your new lawn, let it dry completely. There is a special Tackifier (bonding agent) used to bond the hydro seed to the soil. When it is dry, you will see a lighter green color throughout your yard and the green mulch will feel crusty. Once it is dry, it will be okay to walk on the hydro seed surface for watering purposes only. Divert all gutter downspouts away from hydroseeded areas to prevent wash outs. It is very important to keep all traffic to a minimum on your lawn for the first month, including pets.

FIRST WEEK of Hydroseeding

FIRST WEEK of Hydroseeding

Evaluate your watering methods to be sure that all of the hydroseeded areas of your lawn are staying moist, watering 2-3 times a day. Full sun areas will dry out first. The green appearance may be fading to a tan color, which is normal. Remember to keep people and pets off the lawn during the germination period.

Only walk on the lawn as necessary. Now is a good time to make sure your mower is tuned up and has a sharp blade. We recommend using a push mower for the first few lawn mowings, so you do not tear the new grass when turning.

If you have direct sun on certain areas of your yard and the hydroseed mulch dries out quicker than other areas, be sure to keep those areas moist as much as possible.

SECOND WEEK of Hydroseeding

Continue to keep the seed moist without over-watering. You should now start to see some growth. It is important to remember that even though you see growth, there are still many more seeds that will continue to germinate in the coming weeks. If you don't see any growth by now, it could be due to weather conditions. The soil temperature needs to be at least 55-60º for seed to germinate. Continue watering 2-3 times a day.

THIRD WEEK of Hydroseeding

If you do not see any growth, please let us know! If growing conditions are favorable, you should start to see some uniformity to the grass. If you see any bare spots, you will have to take a closer look. See if there is mulch and grass seed in those spots. If the seed is not there, it could have washed away or may be buried below the soil. If you notice your lawn thriving in the shadier areas and not in the direct sun, you are losing a lot of moisture due to evaporation. It is very important to compensate for this and increase your watering amounts for these areas. If you see grass that has turned brown and is laying down in circular patterns, there may be a disease. Contact us or your lawn care professional for further assistance.

FOURTH WEEK of Hydroseeding

By the end of the fourth week, the majority of the seed should have germinated. The germination period is now complete if no more seed is visible. You may now start watering your lawn once a day. Be sure to increase watering if there is hot weather in the forecast.
